Trend of ambient non-methane hydrocarbons in summer of Beijing city,2004-2009

Background Beijing is the capital of China, and the host of the 2008 Olympic Games. The municipal GDP had been increasing at a rate of 14.4%/year from 2000 to 2008 (National Bureau of Statistics of China, http://www.stats.gov.cn).Beijing had more than 300 million vehicles in early 2008 with the annual growth rate of more than 10%/year in the last decade (Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, http://www.bjjtgl.gov.cn). As a consequence of the fast development, the air quality of Beijing has long been of serious concern. Though the levels of ambient SO2,NO2 and PM 10 showed the trend of stable or even dropping for the whole city, the ground-level ozone concentrations were increasing from the measurements from 1982 to 2003 at one site in the city (Shao et al.2006).Meanwhile,the Grade-Ⅱ National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for hourly average ozone concentration had been often exceeded in Beijing city, the non-attainment days accounted for more than 10% of days in a year from 1998 to 2006 (Beijing EPB Environmental quality Communique,1998-2006).
