A Rapid Portable System for Water General Acute Tozicity Screening
1 Introduction Bioluminescent bacteria have been widely used in toxicity testing.Methods based on bioluminescent bacteria not only have the advantages common to all microbiologically based systems (small test organism size,large number of organisms),but also have the additional advantages of having an easily measured signal and a very quick response (usually on the order of a minute or so). The most thoroughly studied bioluminescent bacterium used in toxicity testing is Photobacterium phosphoreum (also known as Vibriofisheri),a marine bacterial strain. A commonly used test method that employs P.phosphoreum is the Microtox(R) test.
