SEISMIC RETROFIT OF HONSHU-SHIKOKU BRIDGES

Presented in this paper is the outline of seismic retrofit of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridges. After the Kobe Earthquake in 1995, seismic retrofits of the bridges have been implemented in a comprehensive and systematic manner. In addition, seismic retrofit design of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, the world’s longest suspension bridge, is also described as one example. For the retrofit design, site-specific large-scale earthquakes were defined using fault models based on the recent seismological information from government agencies. As a result, it was found that the target seismic performance criteria of the bridge were possibly ensured by taking some minor countermeasures.
