DAMAGE ASSESSMENT USING THE ENERGY DISSIPATION RATIO OF ACCELERATION SIGNALS

This paper proposes a novel damage identification method using the energy dissipation ratio (EDR) of acceleration signals. The efficiency of the method was verified by two numerical tests and a reinforced concrete beam experiment. One can obtain a consistent relationship between the EDR and the damage severity both in linear state and nonlinear state of the structure. In addition, the new method was compared with the means of modal-based damage identification utilizing Morlet Wavelet Transform. The results showed that mean EDR increased by 62.9% in linear state, while mean EDR decreased by 31.0% in nonlinear state when macrocracks were present; furthermore, EDR has more sensibility to damage severity than the natural frequency and damping ratio. Therefore, EDR is probably a promising global damage indicator in structural health monitoring which may be applicable to not only lightly damaged (in the linear elastic state) but also severely damaged systems (in the nonlinear plastic state) during the process of damage.
