FIELD EXPERIMENTS AND NUMERICAL SIMULATION ANALYSIS ON EXPLOSION IN STEEL TUBES
To demolish the concrete cutoff wall successfully in one blasting was a difficulty in the demolition of downstream cofferdams in the second stage of Three Gorges Project (TGP). If only the concrete was crushed in the blasting while the grouting steel tubes and its supports which were pre-buried in the cutoff wall were still intact or unbroken, the underwater excavation of these crushed concrete could not be preceded. Measures by which grouting steel tubes and its supports can be blasted into segments should be researched. In-situ experiments were carried out to study the influence of different factors such as charge structures, cartridge diameters on the destruction of steel tubes in explosions. Numerical simulation of the explosion in the steel tubes were performed by software ANSYS/LS-DYNA. The relationships between the failure mode of steel tubes and charge structures were discussed and proper blasting parameters and charge structure were selected based on these discussions. The research achievements were proved to be reliable by the successful demolition of the cofferdam.
