EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH ON HYSTERETIC BEHAVIOR OF ANGLES’ CONNECTIONS

Most actual connections used in application exhibit semi-rigid deformation behavior which substantially contributes to overall structure displacements and the distribution of member forces. Therefore it is necessary to study the behavior of these semi-rigid connections under cyclic reversal loading. In this paper, three full-scale specimens of angle steel using H-section members were subjected to cyclic reversal loading which simulated earthquake effect on a steel moment-resisting force. Connections response analysis has been done from the points of strength, stiffness and energy dissipation. The hysteretic behavior of angles beam-column connections under cyclic loading is put forward. Rotational stiffness, carrying capacity, ductility of top-seat and web angles connections are analyzed. Conclusively, angle connections can possess the relative high stiffness, strength and excellent ductility due to moment-resisting components in the seismic design of frames. And most of the input energy is dissipated in the flange of angles while the column participates a little in the energy dissipation process in this test.
