New materials based on polytetrafluoroethylene

Polytetrafluoroethylene has excellent chemical stabili ty,good dielectric properties,and the record low fric tion factor.It is weather-resistant,biologically inert, and nontoxic and does not age. These properties prede termined its wide use in many fields of activity,such as atomic and chemical industries, machine building, power engineering,all types of transport,electrical en gineering,medicine,sport,and household uses.How ever,there are some factors that limit a wider use of this material. Technical problems are related to its cold flow,low thermal conductivity and wear resistance,and poor adhesion. Technological difficulties are due to the insolubihty of the polymer and the high viscosity of its melt,which rules out the use of liquid-phase technolo gies.Environmental problems are associated with large amounts of waste of manufacture of PTFE articles and the difficulty of its recycling. The basic limitation is economic,which is due to the high cost of the polymer.
