Recent development on wrought Al-Si alloys based on direct chill casting
Wrought Al-Si alloys have received great attention in the past decades due mainly to their excellent wear resistance and good corrosion resistance, for being used in the automobile industry as functional structural materials. The key factor that inhibits the applica tion of wrought Al-Si alloys is their poor ductility in the as-cast state.Powder metallurgy and spray-forming have shown some advantages in overcoming this problem by introducing fine and uniformly distributed Si particles in aluminum matrix before plastic deformation. In the present work we show that direct chill (DC) cast A1-Si alloys without chemical modification could be hot-deformed and the deformation microstructures are featured with fine Si particles uniformly distributed among the fine equiaxed AI grains. The alloys thus processed ex hibit superior mechanical properties in view of their strength and ductility. This finding allows us to divide wrought Al-Si alloys into two categories, namely structure-aimed and function-aimed wrought Al-Si alloys. The potential application of structure-aimed AI-Si alloys,as to replace some other wrought Al alloys,is discussed with the recent discovery of the mechanisms behind the microstructural evolution of Al-Si alloys during DC casting and deformation.
