Effect of plastic deformation on microstructure and phase composition of Ni3 Al intermetallic synthesized under pressure
1.Introduction One of the main methods of increasing high tempera ture strength of nickel superalloys is to improve strength and plasticity of intermetallic phases, such as Ni3Al compound.Ni3Al polycrystals of stoichiometric compo sition fail by a brittle manner along grain boundaries within all temperature interval up to a pre-melting tem perature 1,2,A slight increasing of Ni3Al plasticity is possible by means of alloying with boron due to a de crease of local deviation from the stoichiometry in grains of the ?-phase,while Ni3B nanocrystals are formed 3-5.It is possible to plasticize the intermetallic com pound more considerably by reducing its microstructure up to an ultrafine or nanocrystal state under intensive plastic deformation 6 . The Ni3 Al intermetallic can be plastically deformed during its high temperature synthe sis under pressure from the powder mixture of nickel and aluminium at the stage of crystallization and cooling the synthesized compound.
