Influence of Si,Ca addition on elevated temperature properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy

The effect of Si,Ca addition on microstructures and elevated temperature (150℃) properties of as cast magnesium alloys were investigated. The results show that the microstructures of as cast alloys with addition of Si,Ca are refined and a kind of new phase,Mg2Si,is formed 0.24% Si and 0.081% Ca was added to refine Mg2Si. The Si,Ca elements can improve the elevated temperature me chanical properties of the investigated alloys. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation at 150℃ of AZ91-0.24Si alloys were 102 MPa,that has increased 40% than AZ91. After the addition of 0.081% Ca,the ultimate tensile strength and elongation at 150℃ were in creased to 117.7 MPa and 2.1% ,respectively. The high temperature creep resistant properties(150℃,50 MPa,100 h) of alloy was evidently improved by added Si,Ca elements. The improvement of elevated temperature mechanical properties are as a result of the crys tal boundary strength of the Mg2Si phase functionary.
