Formation by severe plastic deformation of ultrafine grained gradient structures in surface layer of shape memory materials

A nanocrystalline surface layer of a TiNi shape memory alloy was developed by ultrasonic surface treatment.Regularities of influence of severe plastic deformation (SPD) during ultrasonic processing (USP) on evolution of microstructure,crystalline structure, microhardness and defects in surface layer of TiNi with monoclinic martensite B19 were investigated.It was found that with the increase of SPD both concentration of the vacancy defects and density of dislocation defects raise sharply and intensive fragmentation of grain struc ture takes place at the same time. The results of our investigation show that UST is an effective method for the formation of nanostructured surface layers and their hardening in TiNi based alloys.
