On the ezistence of PrFe2 compound in the Pr-Fe system
1.Introduction Phase diagram of the Fe-Pr system is a principal com ponent of the ternary Fe-Pr-B phase diagram that is of importance from the practical point of view of designing new magnetically hard materials. The Fe-Pr phase diagram given in 1,2 is charac terized by the existence of a eutectic formed at 695±8℃ and 80-85 at.% Pr and the Pr2Fe17 intermediate phase (with a rhombohedral Th2Fe17-type structure) formed by peritectic reaction at 1105℃. A double peak in differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves observed near the eutectic temperature was first found in 2 and tentatively related to the formation of the PrFe2 com pound with the MgCu2-type structure by peritectic reac tion, which occurs near the eutectic transformation. However, the double peak was also observed for the hy pereutectic alloys with 90 at.% Pr.
