Solubility of ozygen in carbon-containing Fe-Ni melts

The thermodynamic analysis of oxygen solutions in the carbon-containing Fe-Ni melts has been carried out. When nickel content increases at the constant carbon concentrations, the higher the nickel content, the lower the equilibrium oxygen concentrations in melt. This can be explained by a considerable weakening of bond strengths of oxygen atoms and by a weakening of bond strengths of carbon atoms with melt as the nickel content increases. Oxygen solubility curves pass through a mini mum whose position changes from 2.443% C for pure iron to 2.842% C for pure nickel with an increase in the nickel content. The oxygen solubility in the Fe-40% Ni,Fe-60% Ni,and Fe-80% Ni melts was experimen tally studied at different carbon concentrations.
