Investigation on producing high purity titanium by electrorefining
4N5 purity titanium crystal could be produced from commercial sponge titanium by electrorefining in NaCl-KCl-TiCl2-TiCl3 molten salt. The source and migrating of impurities was studied during electrorefining titanium.Impurity elements,such as Mg,Si,Ni,Zn,As,Ag,Sn,Sb,Pb and Fe could be effectively removed by electrolysis.However,electrolysis was only slightly useful against V and Mn impurities. One means of reducing V content was to refine sponge precursors to levels consistent with desired target purity.Mn tended to evaporate preferentially during electron beam melting.Nickel was suited for making apparatus which contact with molten salt di rectly.Cr contamination in crystal from the cell superstructure could be multiples larger than that from sponge titanium. All inner part of electrorefining cell should be clad with nickel or titanium to produce high purity titanium.
