Preparation and characterization of magnetic fluorescent nanoparticles

This report describes the preparation and characterization of new magnetic fluorescent nanoparticles.Homogeneous rod shaped zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) nanocrystals were prepared through the smooth decomposition of urea and the resulting co-precipitation of Zn2+ and Fe3+ in oleic acid micelles, and purified by centrifugation of high speed. The coupling of the fluorescent dye (rhodamine B) on the prepared magnetic particles was performed by dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA).X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were used to characterize the phase and component of the co-precipitation products, and demonstrate that they are rod shape ferrites. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation showed that all the nanocrystals present a rod-like shape with an aspect ratio of about 7 and a short axis of 20 nm. A steady-fluorescence study was performed on a Varian Cary-Eclipse spectrofluorometer, and demonstrates that the emission spectra of the magnetic fluorescent particles and a compared equal molarity of unadsorbed dye in Hepes buffer are similar, with a small red shift for rhodamine (4 nm) due to the amide groups or to the interaction between the dye and the oxide nanoparticles.Peaks of emissions bands occurred at 578 nm for magnetic nanoparticles coated with rhodamine B.
