Formation and evolution of cast-iron rolls surface after plasma hardening and service

1.Introduction Increase in a cast-iron roll life is one of the main problems providing improvement of quality indicators of rolling mill products. A promising direction to solve this problem is plasma hardening of the working surface of roll grooves.Development of optimum regimes of roll hardening should be based on the knowledge of proces ses of structure formation under various manufacturing processes.Earlier we have analyzed the influence of surface plasma treatment on a structural-phase state of rolls and their properties 1,2.It has been shown that plasma strengthening improves wear resistance of a cast-iron surface practically twice in comparison with a cast base.In the present work the comparative analysis of a surface of cast-iron rolls 500 mm in diameter after plasma strengthening and the subsequent service in roll ing of ~ 1600 t of deformed bars was done by methods of scanning electronic microscopy.
