Studies on Al3Ti-based inert anodes for aluminum electrolysis

Al3Ti-based inert anodes for aluminum electrolysis were prepared by vacuum induction melting.Microstructural characteriza tion shows that the specimens have uniform structure and consist of Al,Ti phase and little amount of Al phase among Al3Ti grain intersti tials. At 900 ?,the specimens were treated in the oxygen gas and oxide films of 5 u,m were formed on the surface of specimens. After such treatment,the microstructures of the specimens changed.Bar shape grains were formed and aligned parallel along the specimen sur face at an angel of about 30 degrees. The gaps between Al3Ti grains increased to 1-10μm,and formed a tunnel for aluminum diffusion. The structure benefits to form continuously oxide film during aluminum electrolysis.
