Effect of KCl on liquidus temperature and density of MgF2 -BaF2 -LiF electrolyte
Preparation of Al-Mg alloys by melts electrolysis has the advantage of low cost and pollution. In this paper, technological fea sibility of KC1 addition to MgF2-BaF2-LiF melts for electrolysis of Al-Mg alloys was researched by study on the liquidus temperature and density of the melts with especial study on the effect of the KC1. The results have indicated that when KC1 content was lower than 5 wt.% in 45 wt.% BaF2-13 wt.% LiF-MgF2 melts, the liquidus temperature of the melts decreased slowly, but when KQ content was between 7 wt.% and 11 wt.%,the liquidus temperature of the melts decreased fast, relatively. The density of melts has changed between 2.750 and 3.250 g/cm3 when adding 0-11 wt.% KCl at 850-890 ?,which indicated that density of the melts was decreased by KC1 addition.Sepa ration of the melts and the liquid cathode was not influenced by KC1 addtion according to the density data.
