Influence of MgOAddition on Sinter Strength of Blast Furnace

In this paper, the MgO-containing sinter is studied. Laboratory-scale experiments are carried out to investigate the effects of MgO addition on the strength of binding phase and sinter from powdered ore. The underlying mechanisms of these effects are also explored. Then, pilot-scale experiments are carried out by using a sinter pot to investigate the effectsof MgO addition on the strength of sintered ore and other sintering production indices. The results show that the increased MgO addition plays a negative role both in binding phase strength and sinter strength. As MgO addition increases from 1.3% to 3.0%, the drum index (DI) of the sintered ore with R=1.76 is decreased from 67.86% to 62.35%, the productivity of the sinter pot is decreased from 2.22 t/m2·h to 1.34 t/m2·h. Therefore, less MgO addition is favourable for the strength of sintered ore, after considering its effect on RDI and the proper MgO content in BF slag.
