Coal Pre-treating Technologies for Improving Coke Quality

Producing high quality coke is strongly demanded in ironmaking section. Improvement of coke quality leads to increase of blending ratio of non- or slightly-caking coal in coal charge without deteriorating coke strength. Nippon Steel has developed dry coal charging process such as CMC (Coal Moisture Control) and DAPS (Dry-cleaned and Agglomerated Precompaction System). With the coal moisture being reduced to 5-6mass% with CMC and 2-3mass% with DAPS, the advantages of less heat consumption for carbonization, higher productivity and better coke quality were gained. And the operation of SCOPE21-type coke oven was started at Nippon Steel Oita works in 2008. This paper describes the R&D of coal pre-treating technologies for improving coke quality.
