Study on Preparation of High Strength Formed Coke
The preparation of formed coke is an important way for recovery of coke breeze, which significantly increases the utilization value of coke breeze so as to be effective for full use of coke and energy saving. Coal tar pitch has been used as conventional binder for formation of coke breeze. However, pitch would be melted only when it is heated so that heat mixing is needed for raw materials with pitch before briquetting. In this paper, pressure formation of pitch-bonded coke breeze was managed to be operated at ambient temperature by adding a reagent BJ and formed coke of high mechanical strength was obtained after a following thermal treatment. The results showed that, under the conditions of pitch addition of 12 wt%, BJ addition of 2.4ml/(100g coke breeze), moisture of 13wt%, and forming pressure of 35 MPa, the drop resistance of wet briquette reached more than 50/1m. After dried at 120 ℃, the drop resistance and the compressive resistance of dried briquette were 40.6/2m and 11.30MPa respectively. Thereafter, when dried briquette and wet briquette were volatilized at 370 ℃ and 320 ℃ in air atmosphere respectively, followed by a carbonization process at 600 ℃ for 30 min in nitrogen-protected atmosphere, formed coke products were obtained with compressive strength of about 20.00 MPa. Therefore, formed coke of high mechanical strength can be prepared from coke breeze by applying the technique developed in this paper. The reagent BJ activated pitch matrix to generate bonding effect at ambient temperature and, during the thermal treatment, decomposition and condensation reactions take place on pitch, which make the volatile matters to be released and the remained carbon atoms to form C-C bond so as to cause consolidation.
