Blast Furnace Technology With Charcoal Injection: Technological and Ecological Aspects
In the scope of European efforts to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions in the steel industry in the post-Kyoto period, the use of charcoal as a renewable energy source in cokemaking and ironmaking has been investigated. This contribution deals with charcoal injection into the modern blast furnace (BF) via tuyeres. The experimental study presented here and performed at the Dept. of Ferrous Metallurgy, RWTH Aachen University and at the National Centre for Metallurgical Investigations, Madrid was mainly focused on solution loss reaction of charcoal in the BF shaft in order to evaluate the possibilities of secondary utilisation of charcoal not converted in the raceway. Furthermore technological and ecological assessment of BF process when injecting charcoal was performed using a mathematical model.
