Some Aspects of the Future of Blast Furnace Iron- Making and the Equipment: Blast Furnace Design for Low Cost Hot Metal
Low cost hot metal can be produced at high productivity through high fuel injection rates combined with high levels of oxygen enrichment in the hot blast. Availability and lifetime of blast furnace proper, PCI, gas cleaning plant and hot blast system are put under pressure by this evolution of the blast furnace process. The 2008/2009 decline in global hot metal production and (temporary) shutdown of facilities changed the face of our industry. Nonetheless, technical equipment development, driven by the need for iron-makers to remain competitive, is ongoing and is even expected to be accelerated in order for blast furnace installations to meet current and future energy and environmental legislation. This paper addresses trends in iron-making equipment and technology development. Design requirements and operating performance are discussed as well as engineering solutions.
