Trials With LRI at LKAB’s Ezperimental Blast Furnace

To decrease the CO2 emission from steel industry by at least 50% the European ULCOS –Ultra Low CO2 Steelmaking project, funded by industrial partners and EU Commission, was launched in the middle of 2004. One of the sub-projects in the ULCOS programme was the use of pre-reduced iron, LRI –Low Reduced Iron, as the burden for blast furnace ironmaking process in the BF/BOF route. The innovative idea was to optimize the reduction work of iron ore between the natural gas based direct reduction process and the BF process to achieve the lowest CO2 emission. Trials with 100% LRI as the ferrous burden of blast furnace ironmaking process were carried out successfully at LKAB’s Experimental Blast Furnace-EBF, Sweden in 2005. The main objective of the trial was to study the feasibility of the new concept and to explore the potential in the reduction of CO2 emission.
