Dynamic Free Lance Furnace for Direct Iron Smelting Reduction

The dynamic free lance furnace with rectangular hearth for one-step iron smelting reduction is proposed with the intention of improvement of flexible operation and simplified engineering by using the dynamic free lances instead of stationary lances. The injection lances not only transport the gas/solids into the furnace but also determine the process efficiency, production costs and maintenance. The free lances resemble the stationary gas/solid injection lances, the difference is the connection of the lance top with a universal joint so that the lance tip could be freely moved either submerged or non-submerged during the injection. This innovative lance is expected to be used for traditional steelmaking injection as well as the emerging iron smelting reduction. The water modelling of the free lance was conducted and the results indicated the lance movement was closely related with the gas injection rate for submerged lance. The interesting finding was that the free lance could also be moved with the tip placed above the free surface, this character may be used for the oxygen injection for post combustion in the Free Lance Furnace. It is also considered to use the non-submerged free lance to inject the ore/coal particles into the iron smelting bath instead of submerged lance injection.
