Construction of Lianghekou Earth-Core Rockfill Dam on Yalong River

Yalong river,one of the tributary of Yangtze,is abundant in hydropower potential.With twenty one cascade hydropower projects planned,Yalong is the 3rd largest of the Chinas 13 major hydropower bases in total capacity.Lianghekou is the first cascade hydropower project of the middle and lower reaches of Yalong. A 295 m high earth-core rockfill dam will be constructed,which is one of the highest rockfill dam under construction or planned in China. The Lianghekou Hydropower Project is designed by the Chengdu Hydropower Investigation &-Design and Research Institute (abbr.CHIDI). The pre-feasibility study of the Lianghekou Hydropower Project was completed in 2005,and the feasibility study is scheduled to be completed in 2010 based on the plan.Ertan Hydro-power Development Company (abbr.EHDC),the owner who is responsible for the development of Yalong,established the site management organization of Lianghekou Project and started the preparatory construction in 2005.During the construction,a series of key technical issues,such as characteristics of the dam materials under high stress,the deformation and safety control of the dam body,impervious body and interface under strong earthquake condition and complicated geology environment,and the construction organization and engineering quality control,will be faced.In this paper,the design and construction plan of the Lianghekou earth-core rockfill dam are introduced,and the key technical issues are emphatically discussed.
