Design and Verification Analysis on the Maopingzi Asphaltic Concrete Core Wall Embankment Dam of the Three Gorges Project
In order to reduce the inundation of farmland and release the pressure of resident relocation of Zigui County,Hubei Province,upon the resolution made by the Proving Leading Team of the Three Gorges Project,the Maopingxi Protection Project (By the composition of release structure and water retaining earth and embankment dam) will be built,and will be treated as part of the construction of the Three Gorges Complex. As a permanent structure of Class I Grade 1,the Maopingxi Protection Project is an important water retaining front of the Three Gorges Hydropower Complex. The dam is mainly formed by site excavation materials according to designed zoning,and the vertical asphalt concrete core wall is adopted as impermeable structure,which has good adaptation to deformation.. The dam is 104 m high and the total filling volume reaches 12,130,000 m3.Both dam height and dam filling volume are in the leading position among the same type of projects in the world.It is also the tallest vertical asphaltic core wall dam over the world. This Paper introduces the basic information of the design of Maopingxi Protection Embankment Dam,mainly on the selection of dam type,structural layout of dam section,structure layout of asphaltic concrete core wall,the principle of quality control of filling materials,quality control standard and mixture ratio of asphaltic concrete and calculation analysis on the structure of dam.Moreover,the summary,analysis and safety evaluation of Maopingxi Protection Embankment Dam,especially the asphaltic concrete core wall,will be carried out based on the safety monitor results after water storage (135 m water level) and other information. Asphaltic concrete belongs to viscous and plastic material,and carries complex mechanical functions. The design theories and methods of asphaltic concrete anti-seepage core wall in high embankment dam and relevant hydraulic asphaltic concrete technology in China are still in developing stage.It is expected to accumulate experience through construction and operation of Maopingxi Protection Embankment Dam so as to accelerate further development of asphalt concrete anti-seepage technology in the hydraulic engineering field.
