The Desjararstifla Dam:Measures in the Foundation to Mitigate Adverse effects of Faults & Lineaments

The Desjarardrstifla dam, about 70 m high and 1.1 km long earth-rockfill dam,is one of three dams retaining the Hdlslon reservoir of the Kdrahnjukar hydropower project, located in northeast Iceland. The area is designated to be predominately outside the earthquake prone zones of Iceland with limited possibility of a large earthquake occurring.Still,an appreciable earthquake action was considered early on in the design of the dam. This however was reviewed during the construction phase based on new geological findings.Furthermore, potential movements on faults and lineaments existing in the dam foundation had to be considered and counteracted. The prevailing foundation conditions are reflected in the different measures adhered to in the dam foundation. These are considered to i. A.reflect findings of a study by the EERC at the University of Iceland on potential impoundment induced slip or movement on existing faults.Based on this,a movement joint was provided in one fault while all the other faults and lineaments were treated differently, excavated and refilled with the adjoining rock extensively grouted. In the following, the various conditions, geological and other, and the relevant measures will be described in some detail with the pertinent results expanded upon as applies. This paper is an expansion on the relevant issues in two papers presented at NGM in sept.2008.
