Evaluation of Mechanical Behavior of Rockfill Materials Using the Hyperbolic Model
Rockfill materials generally show nonlinear, inelastic, and stress level depending behaviors which can be well-modeled with the Duncan and Chang Hyperbolic Model. In this study, thirty specimens of rockfill materials on which large scale triaxial testing with three different values of confining pressure had been conducted, have been studied and the exponent number in) of the Hyperbolic Model for them has been extracted. It was found that unlike granular materials such as sand and gravel, the n value for a given rockfill material is not constant and varies with confining pressure;this parameter can take even negative values, depending on the amount of particle breakage in the material. The average n values for the rounded and the angular rockfill materials have been then determined and compared with the typical values for loose and dense sands. The effect of particle breakage on the internal friction angle and deformation modulus has also been studied.Based on the results, two equations for the variations of initial deformation modulus and internal friction angle with confining pressure for the rockfill materials are suggested.
