Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant Rockfill Dam Project,Performance And Safety Monitoring

The Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, owned by Itaipu Binacional, was built 24 km upstream from the confluence of the Parana and Iguazu rivers. The Parana river forms the frontier between Paraguay and Brazil and the Iguazu River, the frontier between Brazil and Argentina, while the landmark of the three frontiers is situated at the junction of these rivers. At the construction site of the Power Plant, the hydrographical watershed of the Parana River is 820,000 km2 and its average flow 10,000 m3/s provided by the confluence of the Parana and Paranapanema rivers, whose basins are regulated by close to 50 hydroelectric developments. The construction commenced in 1973 with the field studies required for the execution of the civil works, which culminated in 1982,with the conclusion and installation of the turbines in 1984,initiating commercial operation with 18 turbines, subsequently increased to the 20 units operating at present.Within the hydroelectric complex of itaipu, the left bank contains the rockfill dam, basically constituted by a central core of clay, with foundations seated on sound rock and protected by filter, transitions and rockfill, which connects in the left flank with the concrete dam, whose height varies from 80 to 45 m,and extends for 2.2 km until its enfolding connection with the earthen dam. The first part of this paper presents a brief description of all the details comprising this rockfill dam, together with basic considerations concerning the design of the dam, such as the determinant natural conditions and the studies undertaken to establish the validity of the solution adopted.Subsequent descriptions cover the measures taken for the execution of the project, and all the optimum safety and reliability features demanded in the engineering of each of the components of the dam, such as the foundations, characteristics of the construction materials and the correct adoption of the resistance parameters.Within the context,a general description is given of the instrumentation installed for evaluating the performance of the dam, together with a summary review of the data measured by the instrumentation,a comparative analysis between the measured data and the project parameters, and a brief conclusion covering the rockfill dam performance.Besides this, the modern monitoring system is based upon automatic data acquisition, now in process of implementation, which forms part of the technological upgrading programme being undertaken by the Technical Management.
