Calculation of Actual Vertical Displacement of Rockfill Dams Using Settlement Plates
Vertical displacements(settlement or heave) in rockfill or embankment dams are one of the most important parameter in the assessment of dam performance.Calculation of this parameter during design phase is not difficult.But in some cases measurement of displacement during construction or operation of the dam doesnt show the actual value. The main reason for these wrong measurements during construction period is filling to predefined level instead of specific height due to the settlement of sublayers which is not considered in the design process. One of the most important instruments measuring vertical displacement during construction is settlement plates.By the proper installation,actual vertical displacement can be read and recorded.But in many cases this instrument is only used and monitored during operation period and therefore,the actual displacement never been attained. The base plate which is fixed and installed on the bedrock is known as the reference to measure the displacement of other plates. The displacement of other movable plates installed on the predefined levels,is an indicator for the vertical displacement of sublayers.But this value may be the combination of the settlement of one layer and the heave of another layer. Obviously,these values are relative and should be put together with the value of the other plates. Transforming these relative local values to global absolute values,the actual vertical displacement of each layer can be computed. In this paper it is attempted to find a simple relationship between the readings of settlement plates and the actual vertical displacement in each layer in order to determine the total settlement of the embankment or rockfill dam.
