Damage of the ISAWA Rockfill Dam during the 2008 Iwate-Miyagi Inland Earthquake and Its Restoration

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake with hypocenter located under southern Iwate Prefecture occurred at 8:43 a.m. On June 14,2008. The Isawa dam which was approaching the peak of its rockfill dam body embankment work and is located about 10 km from the hypocenter,was damaged by this earthquake,which caused the dam body to settle and cracking near the core-filter boundary. There are almost no reports of damage by a large earthquake to a rockfill dam body under construction and the process of its restoration,so this report presents knowledge gained at the Isawa Dam following this earthquake.
