Selenium Speciation and Mobility in Soil-An Overview

Selenium (Se) is a naturally occurring trace element in soils with concentrations varying from below 0.1 to 10 (μg g~(-1) or above; although Se concentrations as high as 1200 mg kg~(-1) have been reported in some seleniferous regions. At low intake levels,Se is an essential micronutrient for both human beings and animals, but high levels of dietary intake or ingestion can result in Se toxicity. The mobility and bioavailability of se and its toxicity to the biosphere are related to its association with various soil constituents rather than to its total concentration.
