Removing Ezcessive Selenium from Water Using Modified Filter Media

In many parts of China,selenium (Se) concentra tions in groundwater and spring water are very high. There are two main reasons: one is the individual body of water flows through a stratum of high Se and the other is waters contact with Se polluted industrial wastewater.Selenium is a trace element that is essential for people and livestock,but too much of Se is toxic to humans. There is a narrow range between the essential and toxic concentrations (Rege et al.,1999),which makes Se as an important indicator of the quality of drinking water.In countries of China,the United States,and the former Soviet Union,the provisions of the Se content in drinking water do not exceed 0.0lmg L~(-1).With the development of industrial and agricultural production,Se contamination of water bodies becomes more and more serious;water bodies with excessive Se can also be commonly found in several parts of the world.In addition,the lack of fresh water supplies in arid or semiarid regions,the utilization of Se-laden fresh water is of practically important and significant.In this paper,different modified filter media were tested for their efficacy in adsorbing Se from natural fresh water.
