Removing Selenium from Raw Water by Using Activated Carbon Adsorption

In many parts of China, the selenium (Se) content of groundwater and spring water has seriously exceeded the legal water standards. There are two main reasons: one is that bodies of water flow through Secontaining stratum;and the other is water comes into contact with Se-containing industrial waste.Selenium is one of the trace metals, which humans and animals require, but when present in excess it can be toxic to both.Ranges of Se concentrations are narrow between essential and toxic levels (Rege et al.,1999). Therefore,it is critical to ensure that Se levels are safe in drinking water. Many world-wide organizations,e.g.,WHO (WHO,1996) and the EV and countries like USA,China, and Russia have imposed a rigorous limit on the Se content in drinking water. The acceptable level is 0.01 mg L~(-1).With the development of industry and agriculture, many water bodies are experiencing serious Se pollution. For example, some water bodies in mountainous areas in china are becoming polluted. Thus, processing and making use of those water resources with high Se concentrations becomes important for the Chinese society. In this paper,we report on the efficacy of a new advanced technology for Se removal by using activated carbon adsorption.
