Selenium Metabolism and Selenoproteins in Human Health

Selenium (Se) is a micronutrient that is essential for life but is toxic in excess.Deficiency of the element is associated with at least one human disease.Mild to moderately toxic Se intakes cause hair and nail changes and intakes of larger amounts can lead to organ damage and even death. The biological functions of Se are exerted by selenoproteins, the synthesis of which is dependent on se. Thus,Se deficiency impairs selenoprotein-dependent biochemical functions and can lead to dysfunction of cells or even to cell death.
