Can Selenium Play a Role in Cancer Prevention?Methyl Selenocysteine Pharmacodynamics
The importance of selenium deficiency as a risk factor for disease, including cancer, has been studied extensively. The Nutritional Prevention of Cancer study, led by Dr.Larry Clark, contributed to substantially increased interest in selenium.Clarks data, based on a randomized,double-blind clinical prevention trial, suggested that supranutritional doses of selenium, with selenium provided in a selenized yeast supplement, decrease the incidences of colon, lung and prostate cancer. The decrease in prostate cancer risk observed by Clark appeared especially marked. In addition,Clark observed what appeared to be a strong interaction between selenium at the beginning of the trial and the impact of selenium supplementation (Clark et al.,1996;DuffieldLillico et al.,2003;Duffield-Lillico et al.,2002).Clarks findings were instrumental in motivating a massive prostate cancer prevention trial of selenium in the form of selenomethionine, along with vitamin E,among average risk American men (SELECT). That trial indicates strongly that selenium as selenomethionine does not prevent cancer of the prostate or of any other organ.
