Effects of Different Selenium Sources on Antiozidant Status and Productive Performance in Sow

Selenium (Se) sources added to the animal diet is categorized into inorganic Se and organic Se forms.Sodium selenite (SS),a form of inorganic Se,may act as a prooxidant, which has potential toxicity at high dietary level, whereas selenomethionine (SM), a form of organic Se, does not possess these properties (Seko et al.,1989).Using organic Se has received a wide attention in the additive industry during recent years. The SM would help us to understanding the effect of Se-enriched yeast (SY),because SM is the major ingredient of total seleno amino acid analogs in the SY. Studies indicated that SM is more effective than SS,in depositing Se in tissues, enhances the antioxidant status, thus decreasing the volume of drip loss and stabilizing the meat color (Zhan et al.,2007).Few studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of SM on antioxidant status in sows, which might affect its productive performance.
