Application of Se/CO System in Organic Synthesis:A Brief Introduction

Sonoda et. Al.(1980) reported the carbonylation reaction of aliphatic amines with carbon monoxide (CO) catalyzed by elemental selenium (Se) in 1971. The reaction proceeded smoothly under extremely mild conditions and exhibited high efficiency and selectivity. In the past 37 years, researchers have developed various useful reactions based on the Se/CO system, such as carbonylation of alcohols, reduction or reductive carbonylation of nitroarenes, reduction of ketones, redox carbonylation of nitroarenes and coreagents, cyclocarbonylation reactions, and selenation reactions, etc. These reactions are very important both in synthetic chemistry and life sciences because;1) they provide new synthetic methodologies based on a very cheap catalyst;2) many products of these reactions are known to be useful chemicals;and 3) carbonylation of the nitrogen-containing molecule give peptide bonds, which are closely linked to life sciences.
