Synthesis of Unsymmetric Ureas by Selenium-Catalyzed Redoz Carbonylation Reactions of Nitroarenes and Amines

Unsymmetric ureas, which contain peptide bond (CONH-),are usually bioactive and widely used as herbicides, agrochemicals, and Pharmaceuticals. However, industrial production processes of the chemicals involve highly toxic and corrosive phosgene.Catalytic carbonylation reactions with carbon monoxide (CO) are extensively investigated nowadays and seem to be promising alternative substitute for the phosgene technology.Generally, noble metals (such as rhodium, ruthenium, and palladium) are utilized as the catalysts. However, elemental selenium (Se) was reported to catalyze the carbonylation reaction of nitro-or amino compounds in recent years.Herein we present our research results on the use of redox carbonylation of nitroarenes and amines to synthesize unsymmetric ureas in one pot.
