New Non-phosgene Routes to Pesticides by Selenium-Catalyzed Carbonylation Reactions

Pesticides such as herbicides and insecticides play important roles in agriculture.Containing peptide bonds, ureas and carbamates constitute important pesticides. Traditionally, these chemicals were manufactured by phosgenation of amines. However, the use of phosgene brought serious environmental problems. We have developed a new catalytic technology in recent years, which produce these herbicides and insecticides by direct redox carbonylation reactions of nitroarenes with carbon monoxides (CO). This new method is more economic and environmentally benign, compared to phosgenation technology.
