Study on Transforming Discarded HTPB Propellant into Civil Ezplosive

The paper puts forward and demonstrates the rationality and feasibility of transforming discarded Hyohroyl-teminated Poly butadienel (HTPB), propellant into civil explosive on the basis of its energetic feature, security and consistency. It is based on the principle of zero oxygen balance and detonation experiments, selecting HTPB propellant as the base, AP as oxidant and NC as sensitizer as fundamental components of HAN explosive. The best ratio of the three substances is determined by the maximum heating principle. The detonation heat, velocity, pressure and volume are theoretically calculated and verified by the corresponding tests according to explosive reaction equation of HAN explosive. The results show that after cutting discarded HTPB propellants into particle about 1mm in low temperature, it can be transformed into powdery explosives adding AP and NC powder in the optimized proportion. Tested through the explosion experiment, the experimental detonation parameters of HAN explosive almost amount to the theoretical value and the overall detonation performance reaches the levels of commonly used ammonium-antimony explosives.
