Characterization and Behaviour of an Advanced Squashable Insensitive High Ezplosive
This paper describes the results of and experimental development of new formulations to be applied as Squashable explosive in the HESH warhead of Panzerfaust-60, recently conducted at Dynamit Nobel Defence (DND). These investigations present the developmental work on Silicon based polymer bonded explosives, which will replace the old fashioned HWC explosive that has been in service with the German-Army for many years. The improved properties of the new formulations are compared with existing conventional explosives. Results of shock sensitivity, mechanical behavior, performance as well as the development of the compositions are also described. The new formulations, with Silicon as binder system, were prepared, tested and evaluated. The formulations compared the compressibility, pressing curves, and the received shock sensitivities whilst varying the binder- type as well as the contents in the composition.
