Thermal Behavior of Minimum Signature Propellant Containing Hezanitrohezaazaisowurtzitane and RDX
The effects of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) content on the thermal decomposition behavior of composite modified double base (CMDB) propellant were investigated with pressure differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The burning rates of propellants were determined by a Crawford bomb. The results showed that CL-20 accelerated decomposition of CMDB propellant and induced one or two small exothermic peaks in DSC curves. There were multiple exothermic peaks and one endothermic peak in the DSC curve of CMDB propellant containing a mixture of CL-20 and cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX). The endothermic peak was caused by the eutectic behavior of CL-20/RDX mixture. The burning rate results and the correlation factors of burning rate with DSC characteristic values indicated that CL-20 increased the burning rate of CMDB propellant.
