Study on Propagation Properties of Plasma Jet in Atmosphere

There are wide application prospects for technology of plasma ignition in electrothermal-chemical propulsion. In this paper, based on fluid dynamics, an unsteady, two-dimensional-axisymmetric mathematical model for a plasma jet is developed, and the expansion process is simulated by the commercial software-FLUENT. The characteristics of pressure, velocity, density and temperature of the flow field are obtained. The results from the study indicate that: The temperature is the highest in the core region of the jet, and decrease along the axial and radial direction. The temperature gradient along the radial direction is higher than that along the axial direction. The parameters of pressure, velocity, density and temperature for plasma jet are of fluctuation in the expansion process. The jet head is always in high pressure field, and area near the muzzle is always in low pressure field, the pressure field is of the structure of high pressure and low pressure are appeared in turn, and the radial velocity field also has the similar structure.
