Landslide risk assessment and mitigation strategy

Reducing the impact of natural hazards is an economical and a social necessity. Landslides oc-cur more frequently due to more extreme weather than before and increasing population and exposure. The paper presents key geo-aspects of the assessment of landslide hazard and risk and the mitigation of the land-slide risk. Risk assessment provides a rational approach for quantifying safety within a systematic framework including uncertainties and engineering judgment, and gives options for decision-making. strategies for the mitigation of risk can be structural measures to reduce frequency and severity, or nonstructural measures, such as land-use planning, early warning systems, risk communication and emergency preparedness to reduce the consequences. Risk mitigation strategy involves: (1) identification of triggering scenarios and hazard level; (2) analysis of consequences; (3) selection of measures to reduce or eliminate hazard or consequences; (4) recommendation of optimal remedial measure(s) and rehabilitation plans; and (5) communication with au-thorities and persons involved.
