Slope reinforcement for housing in Three Gorges Reservoir Areas

The Yangtze River Three Gorges Project is the largest hydropower-complex project under construction in the world. The relocation project in the reservoir area involves 20 counties (districts) of Hubei Province and Chongqin City including 277 villages and towns, over 1,200,000 people and 1629 industrial or mining enterprises need to be moved, 820 km roads and 198 bridges need to be rebuilt. Under the large-scale relocation projects, 2874 engineered slopes were formed along with the construction of new towns. They need to be protected by using engineering measures. A special fund has been put in place by the Chinese government, and effective protection measures have been carried out to ensure slope stability and the prevention of disasters. The cutting slopes are mainly soil slope and rock slope. Soil slopes include residual soil slopes, colluvial accumulation slopes, swelling soil slopes, artificial earth fill slopes, etc. Rock slopes include blocky structure rock slopes, layer structure rock slopes, clastic structure rock slopes, etc. Varied protection measures have been used for slope protection in the reservoir areas including shotcrete concrete-anchor bars, frame beams, retaining walls, slope stablizing piles and sheet-pile walls, anchorage anti-shear tunnels, flexible protection grids, drainage, etc. Besides, slope deformation monitoring systems have been set up to monitor deformation failure and the stability state of slopes. The protection measures have guaranteed slope safety in the area and at the same time maintained a harmony with the urban environment and surrounding landscape, duly incorporating the notions of urban beautification, greening and the promotion of culture.
