Evaluation of water leakage at Kamal-Saleh Dam according to Lugeon test results

Water leakage through dam foundation and abutments can present a serious problem to a dam project especially in semi-dry area, such lran, where the preservation of water is so vital. Kamal-Saleh Dam is an embankment type and is located in Western parts of Arak Province and the main goal of its construction is to provide drinking water to the Arak City with over one million of population. In order to evaluate the water leakage through the dam, the joint systems of the rock mass and the geological setting of the site were investigated. Both RMR and GSI of classification methods were used to identify the quality of the rock mass. A number of Lugeon tests were carried out in boreholes driven along the dam foundation and abutments. It was found that the orientation of bedding and foliation have great effect on the engineering properties of the rock mass. The RQD values were in the range of 20% to 60% and this variation was the result of the rock type, orientation of drilling, and the impact effect of drilling tools rather than the origin of rock nature. It was also found that the RQD values cannot be used as an indicator for qualifying the rock mass and as the RQD decreased the Lugeon values were also decreased. Most of water flow mecha- nisms near the ground surface were of dilation type, but at greater depth, linear type of flow was observed during the injection tests. It is suggested to employ closure grouting techniques for the installation of grout curtain.
