Failure probability of an earth retaining wall in loess region before and after retrofitting

A generalized model for calculating the failure probability of earth retaining wall is formulated by taking the design parameters as random variables with normal distribution, and the change of hydraulic pressure is chosen to reflect the infiltration of rain water. Using a gravity retaining wall, which is a real pro- ject in collapsible loess region retrofitted by the authors research team, as numerical example, the failure probability are computed corresponding to such monadic failure modes as the overturning, base sliding, foundation beating capacity and wall strength. The result shows that the failure probability of insufficient bearing capacity of foundation and tensile strength of the wall due to rainfall comes to as 26.9% and 24.1%, respectively, fairly reflecting the inducement of failure of the retaining wall.
