Failure mechanism analysis of consequent bedded slope in thick and rigid rock mass

The Miaojia-dam hydropower station, located on the Bailong River in Koutou Ba Town, Wen county, Gansu Province,China, is initially designed as rock-fill dam with normal water elevation 800m, installed capacity 240MW and annual power generation 907 million K W·h. The main lithological character of the study area is identified as thick layered metamorphic tuff, where the river is running almost parallel with the rock formation, meaning the study area, i.e. the left bank of the Bailong River, is featured by bed- ding slope. Several landslides are also taking shape in the reservoir area. The paper, taking the massive Hejia Landslide in front of the dam as an example, analyzes the formation mechanism of slide-bending model that distorts and destroys the thick layered hard rock bedding slope. The analysis if made from perspectives of topography, Geostatic stress, lithological composition and free face condition basis of field survey and inves- tigation. Results show that high and steep terrain, the Geostatic stress with maximum principal stress running parallel with slopes and the existence of a deeply-rooted soft rock belt are the controlling factors creating the slide-bending model that deforms and damages the thick layered hard tuff slope.
